Responsible Expert in Magnetic Resonance (MR)
The Responsible Expert (RE) for Magnetic Resonance (MR) safety is a key professional for evaluating and managing risks associated with MR facilities. LB Servizi employs health physicists with proven experience in MR safety, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
Main Activities
- Approval and verification of MR facility projects to ensure safety compliance.
- Risk analysis and preparation of emergency procedures.
- Monitoring the integrity of the Faraday cage and ventilation systems.
- Surveillance of the environment and operational compliance checks.
Specific Responsibilities of the MR Responsible Expert
According to point E1) of the annex to Ministerial Decree 14 January 2021, the RE is responsible for:
- Approving the final project to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
- Verifying correspondence between the implemented project and the approved design.
- Obtaining copies of compliance declarations with good practice or technical standards for installed equipment and safety devices.
- Acquiring documentation from suppliers confirming proper installation and functionality of the MR equipment.
- Conducting a risk analysis within the MR site.
- Identifying cryogen transport paths to the MR site.
- Preparing emergency procedures.
- Ensuring periodic verification of the correct functioning of safety devices and auxiliary systems.
- Developing internal safety regulations related to risk management.
- Ensuring proper labeling of medical devices and removable equipment within the MR site.
- Developing the quality assurance program for physical aspects.
- Guaranteeing periodic quality control checks.
- Ensuring regular verification of the Faraday cage shielding effectiveness.
- Conducting physical surveillance of the MR environment.
- Reporting incidents or near-misses related to MR technology to the employer or their delegates.
Periodic Verification Program
For ongoing technical verification, the RE establishes an action program that includes evaluation and checks of:
- Distribution of isomagnetic lines related to controlled access areas and safety zones.
- Faraday cage attenuation to control radiofrequency shielding efficiency.
- Imaging checks to ensure MR equipment quality.
For superconducting magnets:
- Oxygen detection system in the magnet room.
- Ventilation system checks under normal and emergency conditions to ensure adequate air exchange and safety in case of cryogenic gas release.
Thanks to its complete instrumentation and in-house Responsible Experts for MR safety, LB Servizi is able to fulfill all responsibilities outlined in point E1) of the annex to Ministerial Decree 14 January 2021 and perform a full verification of the technical characteristics of MR facilities.
